Going Gently Into That Good Night

I'm thinking a lot about this article from the NY Times written by Susan Sontag's son. It's long but worth skimming, if not reading thoroughly (I did not read it thoroughly myself):

Do you have an Advanced Directive (or whatever they call it in your state)? I was "lucky" enough to be working as a hospital chaplain last year when all that hullabalu was happening in Florida with Terry Schiavo. Day in and day out I was helping patients make and write down decisions about how they wanted to die--and then to see the trauma it causes when those decisions are not communicated...

If you weren't one of the millions of people who immediately filled out an Advanced Directive in response to the Terry Schiavo fiasco, you might want to think about it. Your family (or other patient advocate) may not be able to find this blog entry to know what you want!

Many hospitals have easily-completed forms for this, so you don't have to go to the expense of having a lawyer draw up a more complicated version for you.
